European Testate Amoeba dataset: an interactive visualisation

I’ve recently been working with Dr Graeme Swindles (University of Leeds) and Dr Matt Amesbury (University of Exeter) on producing an interactive visualisation based on their European Testate Amoeba dataset.  Testate amoebae are microscopic, unicellular shelled protozoa that are abundant in a range of wetlands, including peatlands. Study of fossil testate amoebae allows for the reconstruction of ancient hydrological variability. Amesbury and Swindles were the lead authors of a group that published Development of a new pan-European testate amoeba transfer function for reconstructing peatland palaeohydrology in Quaternary Science Reviews (Volume 152, 15 November 2016) [https://goo.gl/15n4QW]. They placed their dataset in the public domain under a Creative Commons licence, allowing others access to reanalyse and re-examine their data, and incorporate it into future research. The dataset is presented as an Excel sheet and, the authors themselves admit, is difficult to comprehend. I’ve been working with them over the last few months to create a visualisation in Tableau Public that dynamically presents Taxa data at geographical, site, and sample levels. The resulting dashboard looks simple, but a significant amount of time & effort went in to paring it back to its essentials, while presenting the data in an appropriate and meaningful way.

At present only limited companies and limited liability partnerships who received in excess of £5,000 (cumulative) are listed. The data runs from the start of the scheme to 28 February 2017. After the list was published (16 March 2017) a number of people complained that they should treated as individuals, and not as limited companies. Emergency Care Waiting Times in Northern Ireland 2008-2017 and forecasting the future

The first of these I’ve turned my attention to is the recently published  Emergency Care Waiting Times dataset. The Dataset The dataset is just over 2100 lines, representing monthly entries per Northern Irish hospital and running from April 2008 to June 2017. The dataset gives the numbers of patients who waited up to four hours, five to twelve hours, and over twelve hours. A further column gives the total number of patients in these three categories. United States Federal Executive Orders

[Note: the dashboard is best viewed in Full Screen (F11) Mode] Back in early 2016, when Trump was still seen as unelectable, he directed a portion of his Twitter barrage against President Obama on the latter’s use of Federal Executive Orders . I’m not going to pretend that I’m so politically astute that these comments caught my attention at that time. However, when commentators started to contrast Trump’s statements with his actions once in office, I immediately felt that this was a place where a visualisation of the data would be of use and interest.
